LATIN FLAVOURS IN KAUNAS: Guacamole

An online review of Guacamole by – Alfas Kelertas

Last Saturday, I went to a  restaurant in Akropolis called Guacamole, here in Kaunas.  I had been to this restaurant before, but never with my dad, so it was pretty exciting.

The outside of the restaurant looked inviting. There were lots of people already there, there was Latin music playing and I could smell a pretty pleasant, yet faint aroma. A waiter sat us down on the second floor of the restaurant. There were very cool decorations all around. Some were lovely art pieces, all sorts of lamps and cool wooden structures. Most of it didn’t feel tacky, pretty rich even, although there was a huge cactus with a sombrero at the entrance, obviously. My dad ordered a Guacamole special “Burning Fajitas” with chicken and vegetables. It was 10 euro. I ordered two chicken burritos and nachos on the side. Also, we asked for pico de gallo salsa. I have had this before, so I knew what to expect, but my dad’s order was sort of a mystery. We’d never had fajitas before. In our family, we enjoy Mexican food, however we don’t have it very often.

We got our drinks pretty quickly and both my dad’s and my food arrived simultaneously around 15  minutes later. The waiter put down a hot black skillet of the Fajitas, warned us not to touch it, and pulled a little black plastic container out of the devil knows where. It contained some sort of liquid. Then, he proceeded to squirt out some of the liquid (which we later found out was oil) over the food. Next, he got a lighter out. He lit it near my dad’s fajitas and they erupted into flames. Slowly but surely, the fire burned out in the span of 20 seconds. It was impressive, however it also explained the 10 euro price tag. It wasn’t much food, so the money probably went more into the show. My burrito was good, although maybe a little bland. I wasn’t expecting much, but it is very unfortunate that Guacamole doesn’t have any spicy burritos. I would’ve definitely preferred that. But the food was excellent nevertheless. I felt full. From what my dad told me, he really liked the fajitas. He said they were a little spicy and tasted amazing. The service was great and our waiter was helpful and informative. He even talked to us a bit about the restaurant.

I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have a pleasant dining experience with a twist. Guacamole has a solid amount of vegetarian options, but not vegan ones though. It has good desserts and dinner meals, but the selection isn’t very wide. Especially if you’re looking for spicy Mexican food. Not much more than a solid chili con carne and the fajitas. Overall, a good experience. 7 out of 10 stars – will come again.

A Goodbye Dinner To Remember: Grill London

An online review of Grill London by – The Queen of England of Kaunas

A month ago, some family members and I went to Grill London for a nice afternoon meal. It was a final goodbye, as most of them were going back to England because they live there. It was especially sad because my sister was also returning to Italy.

The decoration and the interior were quite dark, which my family members didn’t like, but I personally loved it. It really goes with the restaurant. The food of Grill London is based on London restaurants, which are mainly grill restaurants, hence the name. I’ve been to quite a few restaurants in London and their interior really matched the esthetic of Grill London. So they did good on the interior. The cleanliness of the restaurant wasn’t the best. Our table, even after being cleaned, had sauce stains. So, their waiters need to do a better job in that department. T

he menu wasn’t very big but personally I think it’s nice. They offer a simple but very tasty food selection. The prices were low for how good the meal was. When we ordered the food, it took a little while to arrive, but there were a lot of us, ten to be exact. So for the amount of people, the food arrived quite fast. I ordered grilled chicken with lettuce and potato chips. I really liked it. The meat had nice seasoning and was grilled nicely,  although in my opinion the lettuce was quite dry.

I’d rate this restaurant a 4.5 stars out of five.
The restaurant was great. The food is affordable and nice, the interior is very moody and well fit. I’d say it’s a great restaurant to come to with friends for a nice and fun meal. The reason I rate this a 4.5 stars is because of the cleanliness. The sauce  that wasn’t cleaned was quite gross. We did ask for a waiter to clean it, but they seemed annoyed to be asked to do a thing that is their job. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.

A Trip to Asia in Kaunas: Manami

An online review of Manami by – Martyna_Fia

Nowadays, lots of new restaurants are opening. But how do you know which restaurants  are the best for you? If you like Asian food, then “Manami” is a really good choice for you to try. My friend and I went to this restaurant after a movie. We were hungry and wanted to have something fast, so we didn’t have very high expectations.

I ordered the ramen. it looked and smelled flavorful. It was very delicious; a bit  spicy for me, but still good.

When we walked in, we heard calm music playing in the background and the smell was amazing. The restaurant itself was not too impressive: tables with chairs, a kitchen, some plants, and paintings.

The waiters were very nice and we didn’t have to wait long to get menus. When the menus arrived, there were lots of food choices: sushi, ramen, drinks and also desserts. My friend ordered sushi. It looked amazing and as she said it was delicious too, so  she ordered a second portion. I ordered the ramen. it looked and smelled flavorful. It was very delicious: a bit  spicy for me, but still good.

Of course the restaurant looked a bit plain, but the food was amazing. The waiters were very friendly and some even made jokes. I would really recommend this restaurant for people who love Asian food or even just spicy food.

The Taste of Books

By – Rutvyga

Today I’ll start my blog by saying I like fantasy books. I’ll also tell you about my current favourites and past favourites. The first ever time I remember really reading a book for myself was in about third grade. I got into a sort of silent competition between me and a very good friend and classmate of mine. She had always surpassed me in school work and I wanted to surpass her. It was mostly because of her I got into reading and also school work!

I picked it up and could not turn away! 100%

(and probably even more) would recommend.

Now, my favourite book at that time was “The Last Elf” (and/or “The Last Orc”) by Silvana de Mari. I remember I loved how they were written, I could feel all the emotions, from happy to sad moments, from revenge to love. Also I enjoyed just how splendid the storyline was. I actually accidentally read the first book last and it still played out well. The books left me wanting for more! Now that I revisit the books, the letters look huge! The books themselves look way thinner than they used to look. But I do recommend reading them if you like fantasy/adventure type reads.

Jumping back to the present, I’ve upgraded. Instead of the previous seven book series, my current favorite has thirteen whole books! It’s the “Ranger’s Apprentice”  series by John Flanagan. They are incredibly catchy! I could not get my mind off of them easily. I can not wait until I get more time to re-read all of them!! I should add that, for me, these books were like any good cheese. I picked up the first book, read a few pages and gently put it back on the shelf. For this reason I mentioned the cheese: it takes time to age well to be tasty. That book stood on the shelf for quite a few years, but then, BOOM!!! I picked it up and could not turn away! 100% (and probably even more) would recommend.

These both book series are fantasy/adventure type, yet they are very different from each other. I liked the contrast between “The Last Elf’s” fights between mythical creatures and humans, they reflect real life problems and how one corrupt mind can control many innocent people. The other series, “Ranger’s Apprentice” has the topics of loyalty and friendships, personal development and resistance against evil.

So, my taste in books hasn’t really changed much since I started reading. I hope I get to read more classical literature and give fantasy books a chill, but I don’t think that will happen anytime soon!

Spooky Hide-and-Seek

Fear of the unknown and reverence for the afterlife can be said to be as old as humanity itself.

Do you believe in ghosts? Do you think ghosts are dead people’s souls?  My investigation group was curious to know how people felt about this phenomenon and so in February 2022, we asked  the students of Herojus school and we now bring you their opinions.

I first became very interested in ghosts when a chair suddenly fell over when no one was near it. We were super uncomfortable and shocked. So we decided to investigate. “We see the ghost as our biggest fear. They embody fear,” said Kastytis, a teacher at Herojus . A question we could all ask ourselves is: What do we fear?  Many will probably say “nothing,” but most people have many hidden fears.

I asked ten people in Herojus school if they believe in ghosts and 70% of them did believe. I  personally believe in ghosts because I have seen their actions countless times.

The answers shocked me! Many people have seen ghosts and they are super scared of them. For example, there was a student who saw his dead grandfather just standing in an old doorway. Another student, a girl, saw her dead grandmother. The grandmother was saying something with her hands but the girl couldn’t understand because she was only 5 years old.

Almost every student who said they have seen a ghost has felt uncomfortable and scared but it was hard for them to describe their feelings because that feeling was so strange.

Some people believe ghosts can appear in many different forms. I personally think this is a very scary thought. Other people believe ghosts are just scary movie characters.  Still, there are people who believe ghosts are the spirits of their own dead family members. I think this is the creepiest thought of all.

“I think ghosts are like fluffy, soft, skinny skeletons,” said Coach Paulius. I find this way of thinking interesting and cool.

The students I spoke to told me that they also have a lot of friends who believe in ghosts and some can even talk to them. I know this  sounds scary and creepy but I think it could be super cool to talk to your dead relatives and other ghosts from the past.

In our school, there have been a lot of strange accidents that I think could be connected to ghosts like the one where the chair fell over when there was no one around. Still, it is every person’s choice whether to believe or not (was it just a wind?).

My name is Tautvydas and I believe. If you want to share your ghost stories or videos, send them here to ghostsvideo@gmail.com.

Thanks, and keep your eyes open!

All alone…. or are we?

Teacher Abuse

Location of what would soon become the 1st Winter War between students and teachers.

By – Tauras Šeškevičius

On a bright and cold winter morning, what started off as a good day quickly turned horrible for one of the teachers of Herojus School. Coach Paulius was attacked by his students and was left shocked and shivering in the snow. What happened that day?

“Oh the embarrassing and painful war against the 5th graders?” asked Couch Paulius when questioned about that day. With his testimony, a pretty good picture of the events has come to light. Sources inform us that there were multiple snow wars fought between students and teachers in the weeks leading up to the incident at hand. The two main wars were fought between the teachers and the 6-8th graders and later between the teachers and the 5th graders. Coach Paulius’ attack happened during the war against the 5th graders.  To better understand what happened, we need to start from the beginning.

They formed an alliance with him and fought fearlessly against everyone else. But Jogaila and Tautvydas made one mistake that day…

8th graders Tautvydas (left) and Jogaila. Blissfully ignorant of T. Dovilė wrath.
8th graders Tautvydas (left) and Jogaila. Blissfully ignorant of T. Dovilė wrath.

It all started one frosty day in January when a snowball fight broke out between the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders as well as some of the teaching staff. Two 8th grade students, Jogaila and Tautvydas, had  sided with the 6th grade head teacher, Dovile Pelegrimė.  With time, they grew  bored and so they went out to seek new adventures. They found Coach Paulius. They formed an alliance with him and fought fearlessly against everyone else. But Jogaila and Tautvydas made one mistake that day. They attacked teacher Dovile while she was still under the assumption that they were on her side.  Unfortunately they weren’t.  After the battle was over, the two 8th graders thought they were safe.  The war was over for them, but the same was not truth for their betrayed ex-teammate. Teacher Dovile was furious and sought vengeance. She came up with a plan.

Her first target was Coach Paulius. She engineered a second war. The war against the 5th graders. It happened in the moat next to Kaunas Castle. During  a long break between classes, the 5th graders,  Coach Paulius, and some other teachers went outside. Teacher Dovile planned an ambush on teacher Paulius. The moment he stepped out of the school, he was attacked by the entire 5th grade population. He knew he couldn’t take on that many children, so he ran. He ran far. He ran for 30 mins. Unfortunately for him, he could  only run for so long. He was pushed on the edge of the moat where the only place to run was down. But he didn’t make it far enough before 5th grader Julius attacked him from behind, holding onto his leg. As Coach Paulius is a nice person, and did not kick Julius. So he fell down the hill where the rest of the 5th graders doggy piled onto him. A victory for Teacher Dovile.

In the end, Coach Paulius was left humiliated. He also ended up on Teacher Dovile’s Blacklist along with his companions Tautvydas and Jogaila. The event left a permanent mark in Coach Paulius’ memory and it was recorded in history with a video of what happened.

Super Kid: Faustas

By -Emilis Jaškūnas

In the winter season at Herojus School, a kid named Faustas broke 4 sport challenge records, including holding a plank for 16 minutes straight.

“He is much stronger mentally than physically. He did it mainly with determination,” said Coach Paulius of Herojus School.

Faustas Pelegrimas, a 1st grader, is seven years old, but is competing against 5th, 6th, 7th and even 8th graders. He is the son of Dovilė Pelegrimė, head teacher, and Andrius Pelegrimas, director of Herojus School.

“I’ve never seen anyone do something like this before.”

Holding a plank is where you hold yourself up off the floor with your elbows under your shoulders, hands flat on the floor and your core engaged. You need to hold the position for as long as you can. Another one of the records Faustas broke was the Around the World Challenge. For this, you have to spin a ball around yourself as fast as you can and as many times as you can. Faustas also did the Squat Jump challenge where he had to jump from the squat position up the down as many times as he could within 60 seconds. The last challenge that Faustas broke was a Speed Bounce challenge. For this challenge he needed space and an object to hurdle over. He had to stand, feet together, next to your hurdle. He then jumped, sideways over the hurdle as many times as he could for 60 seconds.

I asked his friends and family members and found out a lot of new things about him.

“He really likes basketball and gymnastics. He eats very healthy and his favorite food is broccoli with fresh salmon,” said Teacher Dovilė. Faustas has an older sister and it is thought that she is a reasons why he is inspired to beat older children.

“I’ve never seen anyone do something like this before,” said 6th grader Laurynas.

In short I understood that this boy can be anything he wants in the future, so long as he works hard for it and believe in himself.

“In my opinion this young kid is very talented and really inspired to do these types of things. I don’t think that many students can do this. There are not a lot of these types of kids. He is really lucky to have that,” said Coach Paulius.

Herojus Fashion Bliss

By – Sniegė Čiukšytė

You can find different styles in Herojus! Let’s find out more about the cool fashions of the Herojus kids. I am going to ask the kids what styles have caught their eyes.

Some of the styles in school that kids mentioned include: emo, vintage, and preppy.

I’m going to focus on the people that most kids described as having interesting styles and stylish clothes. These people are: Sophie, Jogaila, Marius and Paula.

“All the apparel styles are very different and interesting in their own way.”

– Martyna Mikėnaitė.

Marius:  About his style, Marius said, “I don’t know where my clothes are from. My mum just buys them for me”. It’s a big mystery for all of us. We didn’t find out where his clothes were from and we may never know. He often wears comfy shirts that sometimes have images and also simple jeans or sweatpants.

Jogaila: He wears colourful t-shirts under unbuttoned collared shirts. He almost always wears blue or black jeans. I guess he really has a thing for jeans, doesn’t he? He even wears band names and images on his shirts, how cool is that!? “His choice of clothing  is  interesting, but I  wouldn’t say it’s that rare,” said Tauras. Well even if this is true, he still looks fashionable.

Sophie: This 5th grader wears really eye-catching clothing that she chooses for herself. She mostly gets them from Bershka or other clothing stores. She wears colourful jeans and  pastel or black coloured sweaters. She said, “I really feel like my clothes make me stand out in class and in school.” Her hair is also dyed green. That’s also a rare thing for a 5th grader!

Paula:  When asked, Paula said, “I don’t know what my style is,” but she really  notices that she stands out from the other kids in school. Almost all of her clothes are from Humana, where she likes to shop almost every week. She wears long skirts on top of pants. Mostly her bottom layers are black. She says she likes layering her clothing and wears sweaters with different patterns or layered shirts with buttons and ties. She also wears dark makeup under her eyes and lots of necklaces and rings with crystals and chains.

I hope you enjoyed reading. What do you think about these fashionable kids? Keep an eye out for more styles and have a good day or night!
